The difference between the tool that works and the tool that doesn't comes down to one material, and one spot on the glass almost nobody knows about.
I have been a firefighter for 22 years. I have cut people out of vehicles more times than I can count.
And there is one thing I see over and over that most people do not know.
The tool in their glove box will probably fail them.
I am not saying that to scare you. I am saying it because I have watched it happen.
I have arrived at crash scenes where bystanders were already there. Good people. Brave people. Swinging hammers and tire irons at a car window as hard as they could.
And the glass just sat there.
Every time, they were hitting the center. Every time, the glass flexed and held. And every time, they looked at me like the window was made of something impossible.
It is not impossible. They just did not understand how car glass works.
Most people don't.
Car side windows are tempered glass. That means the factory heats the glass and cools it in a way that builds stress into the entire pane.
When you hit the center, that stress spreads the force across the whole surface. The glass absorbs it. It flexes. It holds.
You could swing a tire iron at the center all day. The glass would outlast you.
That is not a defect. The glass is doing exactly what it was built to do.
One focused point to the corner and the entire window lets go in a fraction of a second.
This is day one of rescue training. Almost nobody outside of rescue has ever heard it.
But knowing where to hit is only half of it. The other half is what you are hitting it with.
Most emergency tools you find at gas stations or online use hardened steel tips. Steel sits around 7 to 8 on the hardness scale. Tempered glass sits around 5.5 to 6.
That gap is narrow. Steel can break the glass, but it needs a hard swing, good aim, and enough room to generate force.
Now think about when you would actually need this tool. You might be pinned. Injured. Upside down. Shaking. In the dark. Underwater.
Swinging with force and precision is not realistic in those conditions.
Tungsten carbide is different. It sits at 9 to 9.5 on the hardness scale. Diamond, the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth, is a 10. The gap between tungsten carbide and glass is so large that the glass has no structural defense against it.
You do not need to swing. You do not need to aim. You do not need strength.
